Dear Reader Letter...

My name is Carijo Murphy. I was the first in my family to graduate from high school. In 2004, I received my high school diploma from the Snohomish High School. I am the first in my family to go to college and I am determined to be the first in my family to graduate college. In 2005, I attended the International Academy of Design And Technology for my Associates Degree in Interior Design. Halfway through my schooling I decided that Interior Design wasn’t for me. I liked decorating, rearranging and shopping, but I had to think about my future. I wanted a job that I have a lot of passion for, and that would bring me long-term employment. I decided to take a few years off from school and really think about what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

One of the things I love to do is to help others. I love seeing other people happy and I know at the end of the day that I did my job. In 2003, when I worked with people, I was volunteering at Mary Haven Nursing Home in Snohomish. I would go around to each of the rooms and do activities with the patients like reading, playing bingo, making crafts, taking them for walks outside and listening to their stories about their pasts. I really got to know who they were. That experience has helped me figure out what I want to do for a career in my future. I want to work in the medical field and help people, so I decided to go back to school for Medical Assisting. I am currently a full time student at Everett Community College. I am happily married and I have a 12 month old at home who keeps me on my feet.

My dislikes about writing would be the grammar. You never seem to worry about it unless you’re taking an English class to improve your writing skills. What I like about writing is that I get to express myself; whether it is in my Journals, my essays, my work, or even a letter that I am writing to a specific someone. Writing can be a stress reliever for some people. When I first started my English 97 class, I could barely write two sentences. Now I can write three pages and feel comfortable with writing. I am very happy I have the chance to take this class and improve on my grammar and punctuation. I hope that anybody else who takes this class gets as much help as I have.

My strengths are my ability to turn my homework in on time, writing more than a page, and getting to class on time. My weaknesses in writing are writing to little, my grammar and not using enough detail. I have learned how to write more and express myself, as well as to use grammar correctly.

The pieces that I have chosen are a few pieces that have grown with me through the writing process; and have expanded through length, detail and grammar. I am happy to have you read these pieces and I hope you enjoy. They include the following:

1.) Journal: First?
2.) Major Writing Assignment 2: One Of The Biggest Days Of My Life
3.) Journal 2: Getting an education means to me.
4.) Major Writing Assignment 3: Kids Party Planner
5.) Ch. 17 #5: Book Assignment-Joining independent clause and dependent clause.

I think that my writing has improved and I am definitely starting to enjoy writing. I chose each one of these pieces either because they have been through the writing process; they are pieces of special times in my life or have been book assignments. I hope you enjoy reading each one.

Enjoy.

Introduction to: The First Time I…

My first piece I chose was my journal that was done in class April 20, 2010 during my first quarter. The title was, “The First Time I.” The assignment was to write in my journal for ten minutes about the first time something happened. I chose to write this piece because this was a special time in my life and I am happy to share it with others. The strengths this piece shows is being very descriptive of how we were feeling emotionally in this particular moment. “The first time I got pregnant was an amazing experience. We were filled with anticipation and couldn’t wait to call our families and break the good news.”

The First Time I…

The first time I got pregnant was an amazing experience. My husband and I were filled with anticipation. We were so excited to call and tell our families. Both families were so excited for us and the nine months ahead of us seemed so far away. Every day was a new and exciting feeling that I felt come from my stomach. The feeling I got from being pregnant was so calming. Every night my husband would talk to my belly and the baby would move after he was done talking, it was so cute. We were so excited to become parents for the first time. We love being parents, it’s a great feeling.

Introduction to: One of the Biggest Days of My Life…

My second piece was done on May 12, 2010 seven weeks into my first quarter. This piece was my second major writing assignment. The assignment was to write about a true story that was a descriptive narrative paper. I chose this piece because it was another big day in my life; it’s a paper that has grown in the writing process and is one of my favorites. The strengths as a writer shows that I am growing in my writing, as you can see the difference from my first chosen piece and a lot of descriptive words. We popped the top on that fresh bottle of champagne and raised our glasses to a toast.

One of the Biggest Days of My Life…

It was Saturday, August 1st, 2009, one of the biggest days of my life, and I was very anxious, nervous, and excited at the same time. My stomach was in knots, and all I could do was pace the room and keep watching the clock and the big hand go tick, tick, tick. While waiting in the hotel room at the Oscar Hotel to get our hair and makeup done, the bridesmaids Jen, Megan, Kimberly, and I sipped on a refreshing champagne, orange juice mimosa and talked about the past few years and how much our lives have changed. When the white stretch limo arrived, the bridesmaids and I relocated to the lobby to check out before heading to the Neighborhood Chapel. As we headed outside to the limo and loaded everything in the trunk, we popped the top on that fresh bottle of champagne and raised our glasses to a toast.

It was a twenty minute drive to the Neighborhood Chapel, the bridesmaids and I polished off one bottle of champagne and had a few laughs. When we finally pulled into the parking lot of the Neighborhood Chapel, the groomsmen, Tony, Brandon, Dennis, Kyle, Richard, the ring bearer Jaylen, and the balance of the bridesmaids, Holly and Rebecca, were standing outside. As the bridesmaids and I stepped out of the white stretch limo into the scorching 90 degree weather, I could barely stand the heat and a drip of sweat put a run in my makeup. I was dreading being inside the church without air-conditioning and only having fans. It was so hot and humid inside the church, and the fans didn’t really do anything. The bridesmaids were running around from room to room, trying to get all of their accessories, jewelry and high heels put on, or to have, touchups done on their hair and makeup before it was time for my wedding to begin. It was finally time for me to put my dress and high heels on. I knew it was getting closer to when I would have to walk down the aisle. As I watched the bridesmaids walk out into the hall, I was even more anxious, and my heart was beating faster and faster. When my dad, Rick, came in the room, he looked very handsome dressed in his black tuxedo, his red and white rose boutonniere rest upon his jacket, finely pressed shirt and black slacks, with silver cufflinks and black shined shoes. I noticed his eyes fill up with tears, he looked more nervous than I did as he fidgeted in his pockets. There was a five minute silence, until in walked the ring bearer. He was crying and didn’t want to walk down the aisle because he was too tired.

Pastor Dennis Soyer was waiting for the ring bearer to proceed, so the Pastor sent one of the groomsmen to get the ring bearer and he didn’t want to walk out to the altar, it was so cute. Five minutes later, the Pastor decided to proceed without him and it was finally my turn and boy was I ready to finally tie the knot after five years. When my father and I were walking down the aisle, I was praying to god I wouldn’t trip in front of all our guests. We finally reached the altar after what seemed like forever, and we proceeded with our vows and expressing our undying love for one another. We stared into one another’s eyes, as they filled with tears of forever happiness and our hands gently resting in one another’s. We were both very happy and we grinned from ear to ear as we exchanged our sterling silver diamond rings. The butterflies and nervousness seamed to fade away that were surrounding my stomach and tingling throughout my body. The Pastor then pronounced Aarin and I Mr. and Mrs. Murphy. Before we left to the reception, we stood outside the door and greeted each one of our guests, who were anxiously waiting to get out of the heat, as they fanned themselves. We proceeded to the reception and took some pictures with our guests and the wedding party. We then, lined up for dinner and listened to the toasts from our guests. The best man Tony said, “You complement each other very well and I wish you guys the best of luck.”

When we had gotten through the toasts and moved onto the cutting of the cake, we tasted the light fluffy cake covered in light frosting that melted in your mouth. All the girls lined up for the bouquet toss and they didn’t push and shove, due to little kids. We proceeded with the pantyhose orange game, which were five bridesmaids against five groomsmen. You put an orange in pantyhose and tied the pantyhose around your waist and put an orange on the ground and tried to hit the orange across to your partner as fast as you can and then untie and give it to your partner. The girls kicked the guy’s buts. It was so fun and everybody was laughing. We then got to the dances and for not practicing how to dance, we did just fine and nobody tripped on anybody’s feet. As the evening was winding down and our guests started leaving, we figured we should hit the road too. We had a long drive ahead of us to Leavenworth, before we could begin to relax and enjoy our honeymoon.

Introduction to: Getting an Education Means to Me…

My third piece is my second journal that was done on April 2, 2010, during the start of my first quarter. I was supposed to write in my journal for ten minutes about, “What does getting an education mean to me.” I chose this piece because, it shows how motivated I am and that getting an education means a lot to me. The strength that this piece presents is that I am motivated and that I express myself very well in my writing. Getting an education means that I will have completed another one of my goals and it will make me feel like another role model for my daughter.
